Translate a Foreign Parental Consent for a Child for Russia

Translate a Foreign Parental Consent for a Child for Russia

A parent abroad consents to a child's travel, residence or document application in Russia. The key: sign and notarise the consent where the parent is, apostille it there, and only then translate and notarise it in Russia — 2–3 business days once that's in hand.

  • A clear scan of the full child-travel consent letter, including every page, any stamps and notarial seals

  • The full name of the child and the consenting parent, spelled exactly as they appear in their passports or IDs
  • What the child will do in Russia — travel, reside, enroll in school, apply for a document, or similar
  • A phone number, email, or Telegram handle so we can reach you with any questions

Why the Sequence Matters: Apostille Before Translation

A parent living abroad signs the consent before a notary or equivalent authority in their own country. At that point — before any translation — the document has to be apostilled: a certificate authenticating its origin, placed by the designated authority of the country where it was signed. That authority varies by country and may be a Ministry of Justice, a court, or another body designated under the 1961 Hague Convention; we do not place it and it is never placed in Russia. Only once the apostille is on does the document come to us for translation.

Here is the part worth getting right the first time: a translation made before the apostille is added generally has to be redone once it arrives, because the apostille authenticates the original signed document and a translation made ahead of it does not reflect that final state. Order the apostille first, in the country where the consent was signed, then send us the apostilled document.

What a Child-Travel Consent Letter Authorizes

A consent letter can cover several situations: a child travelling to or within Russia without the parent present, residing in Russia for a school year or longer, or having someone else apply for a document — a Russian passport or a residence permit — on the child’s behalf. Each purpose needs a letter drafted for that specific case, in the country where the parent lives; we do not draft the letter itself, only translate what has already been signed and apostilled. It often travels alongside the child’s birth certificate translation.

Russian Notarization of the Translation

Once we have the apostilled letter, a translator renders it into Russian and a licensed Russian notary certifies that translator’s signature, under Article 81 of the Fundamentals of Legislation on Notaries — the signature, not the accuracy of the translation and not the validity of the underlying consent. The same notarisation applies to a power of attorney translated for use in Russia. Whether the receiving office — a border officer, a school, a registry office, an employer — accepts what we deliver is that office’s decision, not ours.

Requirements Differ by Route

What a border officer wants from a travel consent, what a school wants for an enrolment, and what a migration office wants for a residence permit are three different lists, and they shift further with the child’s citizenship and the specific circumstance. We do not advise on what a particular office will accept — confirm that with the office receiving the file before you order. If you also need someone in Russia to act on the child’s behalf — a bank matter, for instance — a power of attorney issued from Russia covers that separately.

Price and Ordering

Translation of a standard one-page child-travel consent letter is €49, notarization included. Our rates are on the pricing page, and if you send us scans of the consent letter and apostille, we confirm the exact figure within 2 hours during working hours — fixed before you pay, not adjusted afterwards. The notarized translation takes 2–3 business days once clear scans are in. If you need the document shipped, courier delivery to the EU or US takes 2–5 weeks.

If a Russian authority rejects your translation because of a mistake we made — a misspelled name, a mistranslated term, a missing seal — we redo it at no charge, on a rush basis.

Applies to our own translation and notarization work; does not cover requirements set by the receiving authority, such as an apostille it turns out you needed, or a document type or language version it does not accept.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an apostille on the consent letter before sending it to you?

Yes, in most cases. It goes on in the country where the consent was signed and notarised, placed by that country's designated authority — never by us, never in Russia. If your country has a legal-assistance treaty with Russia, such as the CIS countries, Serbia or the Czech Republic, none is required.

What does an apostille do, and why is it placed before translation?

It authenticates the original signed document. A translation made before the apostille is added does not reflect that authenticated state, so it usually has to be redone once the apostille arrives — order the apostille first.

Can a Russian notary certify that the consent is valid or will be accepted?

No. A Russian notary certifies the translator's signature under Article 81 of the Fundamentals of Legislation on Notaries — not the accuracy of the translation, and not whether the consent itself is valid or will be accepted.

How long does it take to translate and notarize a child consent letter?

Standard turnaround is 2–3 business days from the moment we receive a clear scan of the apostilled consent and what the child will be doing in Russia.

I do not know whether my country requires an apostille for Russia. What should I do?

Tell us which country the consent was signed in and we will check for you before you order.

We are not a Russian government agency, a court, a notary authority or a legal adviser. An apostille on a foreign consent is placed by the designated authority of the country where it was signed — never by us and never in Russia. The consent must be signed and notarised there, apostilled there, and only then translated and notarised in Russia. A Russian notary certifies the translator's signature under Article 81 of the Fundamentals of Legislation on Notaries, not the validity of the consent. Requirements differ by authority and route — confirm with the receiving office before you order.
