Why a Foreign Certified Translation Is Not Enough for Russia
A diploma translation stamped by a sworn or certified translator abroad is not accepted on its own by Russian authorities. Under Article 81 of the Fundamentals of Legislation on Notaries of the Russian Federation, a Russian notary certifies the signature of a translator who holds a recognized translation diploma and is registered with that notary’s office. This is the format Russian employers, universities, and the nostrification process require. Our translators are diploma-holders registered with a Russian notary, so every diploma translation we deliver already meets this requirement.
Do You Need an Apostille First?
An apostille has to be placed on your diploma in the country where it was issued, before you send it to us. We do not issue apostilles ourselves; we accept a diploma that has already been apostilled, or an original from a country that does not need one. If your diploma comes from a country with a legal-assistance treaty with Russia, including the CIS countries, Serbia, and the Czech Republic, no apostille is required. This page covers one direction only: a diploma issued outside Russia that you need translated into Russian for use inside Russia, for example for a job or for nostrification. If instead you have a Russian diploma and need it apostilled for use abroad, for a foreign employer, university, or an agency such as WES or ENIC-NARIC, that is the reverse service, and the apostille has to come from the Russian region where the university is located, not from us translating anything.
