Two Audiences: Driving in Russia and Exchanging Your Licence
Two groups need to translate a foreign driver’s licence into Russian. The first is already driving here on a valid foreign licence and wants the translation to hand: at a traffic stop, at vehicle registration, or with an insurer, a readable Russian version settles most of the conversation. The second is applying to exchange a foreign licence for a Russian one, where the translation goes into the file alongside everything else.
Both need the same thing from us: a complete notarised Russian translation of both sides of the card. What we deliberately do not do is tell you what that translation entitles you to. Who may drive in Russia on a foreign licence and for how long, and who may exchange one without re-sitting a test, is set by Russian traffic legislation that has been rewritten more than once — a rule copied onto this page today could mislead you in six months. Those answers come from the ГИБДД (the Russian road police) or the office handling your application, and they are worth getting before you order rather than after. What a Driving Licence Contains: Both Sides Matter
A driving licence is a card, and what needs translating runs across both faces of it. The front usually carries the photograph, name, date of birth, signature and the issue and expiry dates; the back carries the vehicle categories and any restrictions or endorsements. That is why we ask for both sides — a scan of the front alone leaves out precisely the part an office wants to read. We render the codes as they appear rather than converting them into Russian equivalents, because mapping one country’s categories onto another’s is not a translator’s call.
Apostille and Legalisation: We Do Not Handle Them
Apostille and consular legalisation are processes carried out in the country that issued your driving licence, not in Russia. If the Russian authority receiving your licence requires an apostille—a simplified form of legalisation recognised between Hague Convention states—it has to be obtained before the licence reaches us, from whichever body your country has designated to issue apostilles. That is rarely the licensing authority itself; in most countries it is a ministry or a court office, and only your own country can tell you which. We then translate and notarize the (already-apostilled) original here in Russia.
Not every licence needs one. Some countries use consular legalisation instead, through their embassy or consulate; others, particularly CIS states with legal-assistance treaties with Russia, may need neither. Ask the Russian office receiving your file what it wants and arrange it at home first — we translate and notarise once the licence reaches Krasnodar, and handle nothing that happens abroad.
What the Russian Notary Certifies
The Russian notary does not verify the contents of your licence or judge whether it is still valid. What the notary certifies is the signature of the professional translator registered with that notary’s office. That certification is what Russian offices are looking for: traffic police, regional authorities and employers accept translations notarised by a Russian notary, and a translator’s signature alone does not carry the same weight. Your Name Must Match Across All Documents
Russian authorities cross-check all the documents in your file. Your name as spelled in the driving licence translation must match exactly how it appears in any other document you are submitting—your passport translation, birth certificate, marriage certificate, or any other paperwork. Transliteration rules vary by country and by year, and the translator must choose one consistent approach and apply it to all your documents in the same application.

Does my driving licence need an apostille?
Check with the Russian office that will receive it. If they require an apostille, obtain it from the national driving licence authority in the country where your licence was issued, and send the apostilled licence to us. We translate and notarize it in Russia.
Can I drive in Russia on my foreign licence while my translation is being done?
That is a question for the ГИБДД or the Russian traffic police. Rules change and vary by region. We do not interpret Russian driving law. Contact the traffic police or the regional authority directly to confirm what you are permitted to do while your translation is in progress.
Do I need to be in Russia when you translate my licence?
No, the work is done remotely. Send a clear scan of both sides, confirm the spelling of your name and tell us which office is asking, and you have the notarised translation in 2-3 business days — as a PDF by email, with the paper original by courier if you need it.
What if my driving licence is close to expiry?
Tell us when you order and we will not slow you down, but whether an office will accept a translation of a licence that is about to expire is its decision, not ours. Ask the receiving office first — that is one short question that can save you the cost of translating a document they will not take.
Does the spelling of my name on the driving licence need to match my other documents?
