Russian Documents for Use in Egypt

Russian Documents for Use in Egypt

Egypt is not in the Hague Apostille Convention, so a Russian document going there takes a different route from the one our other country pages describe: consular legalisation rather than an apostille. We do the notarised translation; the legalisation itself is arranged in Moscow and we do not perform it.

  • Fully remote — no trip to Russia
  • Since 2001

What to Tell Us

  • Which Russian document you need: marriage certificate, birth certificate, police clearance, or something else
  • Which Egyptian office it is for, and what for: a registry, an employer, a bank, a university or another authority
  • Whether that office told you it needs the document legalised, or what else it requires
  • Which language it wants the translation in, and whether a translation made in Russia is acceptable to it
  • A mailing address for the finished document
  • A phone number, email or Telegram handle so we can reach you with the fixed price before you pay

If you arrived here from our pages on Turkey, India or China, set that reading aside: Egypt works differently. It is not a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, so there is no apostille route for a Russian document going there. The route is consular legalisation — a longer chain, run on the Russian side before the document leaves: the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the Egyptian diplomatic mission, all of it in Moscow.

Now the part worth reading before you order, because people are usually not told it: we do not perform consular legalisation. It is done only in Moscow and it is not our service; where a client needs it we hand the order to a partner who does that work there, and we tell you what our commission is. What we do ourselves is the translation and the notarised copy — a diploma-holding translator registered with our notary produces the translation, and the notary certifies that translator’s signature under Article 81 of the Fundamentals of Legislation on Notaries. The signature, not the accuracy.

Two separate questions decide what you order, and they are easy to run together. The first is whether the Egyptian office will work from a legalised notarised copy instead of your original — where it will, your only original never leaves Russia. The second is the translation: which language that office wants, and whether it takes one made and notarised in Russia rather than locally. Both are its decisions, with no general rule for us to hand you, so ask before anything is arranged or paid for. The documents we are asked about most often for Egypt are a Russian marriage certificate, a Russian birth certificate, and a certificate of no criminal record.

On timing we give our own figures and no others. The notarised translation takes 2–3 business days once we have clear scans and payment, and the signed scan reaches you by email the moment it is done; courier to Egypt runs 2–5 weeks if the paper original has to travel. How long the consular stage takes belongs to the offices doing it, and we will not put a number on it — a made-up estimate is worse than none when you are planning around a date.

Price depends on the document and its length rather than on the destination country; the standing rates are on the pricing page. Send scans through the order form and you will have a fixed price for our part within 2 hours during working hours, before you pay anything. If legalisation goes through the partner, that cost is quoted separately with the commission stated, so you can see what is ours and what is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get an apostille on a Russian document for Egypt?

No, and not because of anything we decide: Egypt is not a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, so the apostille is not a form that operates between the two countries. Consular legalisation is.

Do you do the consular legalisation?

No. It is done only in Moscow, through the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Egyptian diplomatic mission, and it is not a service we provide. Where a client needs it we pass the order to a partner in Moscow and tell you what our commission is.

How long does the consular stage take?

We do not know and will not guess: that timing belongs to the offices doing the work. Our own part, the notarised translation, is 2–3 business days from clear scans — the only figure we put our name to.

Will an Egyptian office accept a legalised copy instead of my original?

Its own decision, and it differs between offices and document types. Ask the one receiving your document before anything is arranged — if a copy will do, your original never has to leave Russia.

Will it accept a translation made in Russia?

Again its decision — some offices do, others want one made locally. Ask in the same conversation as the legalisation question and tell us the answer, so we quote the right work.

Can a passport be legalised for Egypt?

No — passports are not apostilled or legalised anywhere. If an Egyptian office asks for your passport, it wants a translation; send a scan and we will say what is actually needed.

We are not an Egyptian or Russian government agency and not a law firm; this is not legal advice. Egypt is not a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, so the route is consular legalisation rather than an apostille. We do not perform it: it is done only in Moscow, and where a client needs it we refer the order to a partner there and disclose our commission. What a particular Egyptian office requires, whether it will work from a legalised copy, and whether it will accept a translation made in Russia are that office's decisions alone. A Russian notary certifies the translator's signature under Article 81 of the Fundamentals of Legislation on Notaries, not the accuracy of the translation. Passports are not legalised in any country.
