  • The country where you plan to use the apostilled certificate, so we can flag any extra requirements for that country

Why Apostille Matters for Russian Marriage Certificates Abroad

A Russian marriage certificate is proof of your legal marriage status, and you will need it abroad for spouse or family visas, residence permits, name-change updates in your foreign documents, proving marriage in courts handling divorce or inheritance, and pension or insurance claims by or for a spouse. An apostille is a certificate under the 1961 Hague Convention that lets a foreign country trust a Russian document without further embassy checks. Because apostille authority in Russia is regional, your marriage certificate can only be apostilled by the regional ZAGS department or regional Ministry of Justice office for the Russian region where you were married. We work with Krasnodar-region ZAGS offices; if you were married in a different region, we can either prepare a notarized copy and apostille for you, or connect you with a trusted partner in that region.

If you no longer have the original certificate, that does not stop the process. The ZAGS office that recorded your marriage keeps its own registry, and can issue a duplicate upon request. We can request that duplicate for you using a power of attorney if you cannot visit the office yourself, and then take the duplicate through the same apostille process as an original. Once apostilled, a duplicate carries the same legal weight as the original certificate and is accepted just as widely abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I lost my Russian marriage certificate. Can you order a duplicate and apostille it?

Yes. We can request a duplicate from the ZAGS office that recorded your marriage, using a power of attorney if you cannot visit in person. Once we receive the duplicate, we proceed with apostille the same way as an original. The whole process usually takes 17–34 business days, plus courier time.

Do I need my spouse's consent to get a duplicate marriage certificate?

No. The ZAGS office issues a duplicate upon request from either spouse, using their passport or ID. You do not need your spouse's signature or consent to order the duplicate or apostille it.

How long does it take to get an apostille on a Russian marriage certificate?

Apostille itself takes 7–14 business days. If the original is lost and we need to order a duplicate first, add 10–20 business days before that clock starts. Once the apostille is attached, we email you a scan the same day, and the original travels by international courier, typically 2–5 weeks to the EU or US.

Can I get the apostille and translation together?

Yes. We can provide a certified translation of your marriage certificate and the apostille stamp together in one package. Tell us which country will receive the document and we will translate it into the language that country expects.

Is the apostille enough for a spouse visa, or do I need extra documentation?

Visa requirements vary by country and embassy. Most EU and US offices accept an apostilled original marriage certificate as proof of marriage status, but some may also request a certified translation, or the original plus a notarized copy. Tell us your destination country and we will advise what that country usually expects.

Can you apostille a marriage certificate issued in another Russian region?

The Krasnodar regional apostille authority can only apostille documents issued by ZAGS offices in Krasnodar region. If your certificate was issued elsewhere, we can arrange a notarized copy with apostille, or refer you to a trusted partner in the region where you were married.

We are not a Russian government agency. We apostille original marriage certificates only when a ZAGS office in Krasnodar region issued them, or arrange apostille of a notarized copy for documents from other regions. If your original is lost, we can help you request a duplicate from the ZAGS office that recorded your marriage. A duplicate carries the same legal weight as the original once apostilled. Typical door-to-door delivery to the EU or US is 2-5 weeks on top of processing time, depending on courier routing. Visa and document requirements are set by the receiving country's immigration authority, not us — please check with your destination embassy or consulate before sending your application.
