Professional Translation: What It Is and When You Need It

A professional translation is an accurate, fluent translation of a document for reading, review, or internal use, done by a qualified translator without a notary's stamp or any official certification. It is the right choice for most personal and business documents connected to Russia that are not being submitted to a Russian court, registry, or government office.

Most of the Russian documents that cross a translator’s desk are never going to be filed with a court, a notary, or a government registry. A small business owner exchanging contract drafts with a supplier abroad, a family reading a relative’s medical discharge summary from a Russian hospital, a foreign manager reviewing a Russian partner’s internal reports before a meeting — none of these need an official stamp. What they need is an accurate, fluent, professionally produced translation that lets them understand the document and act on it. That is professional translation: the same translation quality as a notarized translation, without the certification step that only a share of documents actually require.

When Professional Translation Is the Right Choice

  • Reading or reviewing a Russian document for your own understanding, with no submission to any authority
  • Preparing business correspondence, proposals, reports, or website content between a Russian and a foreign company
  • Translating a CV, cover letter, or personal profile for a job or study application that does not require certification
  • Getting an internal, non-official translation of a contract or report before deciding whether to move forward with a deal

When You Need Something Else Instead

  • Submitting a translated document to a Russian ZAGS office, court, bank, or Rosreestr — use our notarized translation service instead
  • A European bank, law firm, or compliance team needs to review Russian bank statements, company extracts, or property records for KYC or due diligence — see our dedicated European business translation service
  • The document needs to leave Russia and be recognized abroad with an apostille — see our apostilled translation service

Professional Translation vs. Notarized Translation

The difference between the two is not accuracy — both are produced by a qualified translator and checked before delivery. The difference is legal status. A notarized translation carries a Russian notary’s certification, under Article 81 of Russian notary law, of the signature of a translator registered with that notary’s office. This is the format Russian ZAGS offices, courts, banks, and Rosreestr require before they will accept a foreign-language document. A professional translation carries no such certification. It is meant to be read and relied on by the people who requested it, not filed as an official document. If you already know your translation is going to a Russian government office, court, or registry, go straight to our notarized translation service and save yourself a step.

Our Accuracy Guarantee

Every professional translation is produced by a qualified translator and checked by a second reviewer before delivery. If you find a specific term or passage that is unclear or inaccurate, we correct it free of charge.

This guarantee covers translation accuracy only. It does not add certified or notarized status — for that, use our separate notarized translation service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between professional and notarized translation?

Both are done to the same standard of accuracy by a qualified translator. A notarized translation additionally carries a Russian notary's certification of the translator's signature, which is what Russian ZAGS offices, courts, banks, and Rosreestr require. A professional translation has no such certification and is meant for reading, review, and internal decisions rather than official filing.

Can I use a professional translation for immigration or a Russian court?

No. Russian courts, the migration service, ZAGS offices, and Rosreestr require a notarized translation under Article 81 of Russian notary law. If your document is going to any of these, use our notarized translation service instead.

Do you translate personal documents like letters or a CV?

Yes. Personal correspondence, CVs, cover letters, and similar documents that do not require official certification are exactly what professional translation is for.

How is this different from your European business translation service?

Our European business translation service is a dedicated version of professional translation scoped specifically to Russian bank statements, company documents, and property records reviewed by European banks and law firms. This page covers professional translation more broadly, for any Russia-related business or personal document.

How much does a professional translation cost?

It depends on the document type, length, and language pair. Send it to us in Telegram or check our full price list for a starting point, and we will confirm an exact price before you order.
